Biotech Partners Celebrates 20 Years of Transforming the Lives of Youth

Biotech Partners, the technical biotech education program, will celebrate its 20-year anniversary at the California Academy of Sciences on April 3.

Over the past twenty years, Biotech Partners has educated more than 2,000 students and placed more than 1,000 students in paid internship and training positions, resulting in earnings of approximately $3 million to-date. The program has a 100 percent high school graduation rate and 100 percent college acceptance rate.

“Biotech Partners is thrilled to be at the forefront of STEM education,” said Board President Dr. Caroline Kane, professor in residence emerita at UC Berkeley. “Keeping science exciting and engaging students in a way that keeps them interested, makes students eager to pursue 21st century careers in the growing and prospering biotech and related industries.”

Founded in 1993, Biotech Partners provides a unique linked-learning Career Technical Education (CTE) program for at-risk and under-served East Bay high school and community college students that features a rigorous hands-on lab education; job preparedness training; paid practical internships in the biotechnology, bioscience and healthcare industries; and academic and personal support. Biotech Partners believes that all students can succeed if provided opportunity, support and motivation.

“Biotech Partners lives up to its name by collaborating with more than 35 biotech, healthcare, corporate, education, foundation and government partners, as well as more than 100 individuals,” added Executive Director Deborah Bellush. “This year we are pleased to honor Amy Hansen, recently retired from Berkeley High School, as Exceptional Educator; the employees of Bayer HealthCare as Special Volunteers; City of Berkeley’s YouthWorks as Prominent Partner; JBEI and SynBERC as Exceptional Mentoring Partners; and Lasandra Patterson as Outstanding Alum.”

Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson will emcee the ceremony that features keynote speaker Suzy Jones.

Corporate sponsorships and individual tickets for the event are now on sale. Sponsors to-date include Bayer HealthCare, BioMarin, Boehringer Ingelheim, Steve and Susan Chamberlin, Onyx Pharmaceuticals and Wareham Development.

The featured raffle is a Dinner Around the Bay restaurant raffle in which the winner receives 12 dinners for two at some of the Bay Area’s finest restaurants, from Chez Panisse (in Berkeley) to Hillstone Houston (in San Francisco). Only 100 tickets are being sold (at $100 each) for this fantastic prize. For more information and tickets, go to http://www.biotechpartners.org/Gala2013.html.
