Speed Networking Brings Students and Industry Volunteers Together
Nicole Grant and Yoko Hirata sat across from Rocio Gomez, Technical Scientific Consultant at BioTek Instruments and discussed their internship experiences at Chimera Bioengineering and Dr. Jorge Palop’s lab the Gladstone Institutes, respectively, made possible through the City College of San Francisco’s (CCSF) Biotechnology Certificate program. Rocio Gomez then discussed how she had gotten to her current position at BioTek Instruments and how she had used many of the techniques Nicole and Yoko described in their internship. After talking more about their backgrounds, the two exchanged cards and agreed to connect on LinkedIn.
Such interactions occurred multiple times in the course of a two-hour Speed Networking event organized by CCSF and the California Life Sciences Institute. The event brought 14 industry professionals and 30 students together last month to help students learn more about the broad range of professions available in the life sciences and to enable them to establish a few key industry connections to support their career development. Industry volunteers similarly got to share their expertise with students and meet potential new talent for their organizations.
CLSI is a strong proponent of such networking opportunities and organized a similar event last year for high school females. “As community college and high school students begin to explore possible career interests, it is never too early to begin forging connections with people who can provide a sense – and potentially an opportunity – for a life science career,” said CLSI President & CEO Lori Lindburg. “This is also a great way for professionals to give back and possibly find future employees. We hope more volunteers will step up to participate to the plate to participate in these valuable career-building events.”
